Books I Love: Lucky Ducklings

This is one of my new favorite children's books. I found it at the library and love it so much that I will probably purchase it to add to my own collection of children's books. Reminiscent of Robert McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings, this sweet, sweet book tells the true story of a Mama duck and her little ones and their hazardous journey across a grate covering part of the street in a city in New York.

The Mama makes it across the grate but the ducklings, being too tiny, fall in one by one. Thankfully, someone observes what happens and they are systematically rescued from the drain and restored to their Mama.

The illustrations in Lucky Ducklings are vivid, simple, and bright.  The story line is easy for young children to follow. I would say that it is a good story to read to a child anywhere from 2 and up. My kids loved it (they are 3 and 5 right now). I love the way that this story teaches children compassion for the Lord's creation and represents the ducks as sweet and innocent rather than sarcastic and crude (as many children's books unfortunately represent animals these days).

I am always so excited when I find a good book at the library; it seems harder and harder to find good, solid, edifying books for children. But this was one!

The only "issue" I had with the book is its title--I just explain to my children that as Christians, we don't believe in luck, rather, that the Lord's hand works in all things. I remember my Mom always telling me that when I was little and now I find myself echoing her words! :-)

At any rate, I strongly recommend this book for your personal library; you and your kids will enjoy it immensely! :-)

  1. Hello! We're neighbors at Holley's link up today. Illustration draws me in as much as words in children's books and these illustrations compliment the sweet story you summarize. It's always a delight to find good books to share with your children.

  6. I didn't know this book existed and set in New York City - where I live. I also lived near Boston for many years so I'm familiar with Make Way for Ducklings. And my children have sat on the bronze ducklings in the Public Garden in Boston on many occasions.
