Growing up, my sisters and I were blessed by a Mother who read to us and who encouraged us to read. Reading has always been a wonderful part of my life, and the Lord has used the words of His men and women to teach me, to build courage in my heart, and to draw me nearer to Himself through the pens of His servants. Oswald Chambers, Andrew Murray, Lilias Trotter, John Bunyan, George Mueller . . . and so many others have helped to shape my thinking and to encourage me toward a deeper, more daily-surrendered walk with my Father.
Especially in my teenage years, I was deeply drawn towards missionary biographies, and these have been instrumental in illustrating for me the blessing and cost of a life that is fully offered to the Lord.
In thinking about the influence that books have had upon my life, an idea came to me -- a monthly book giveaway. Once a month, I'd like to give away a copy of a book that has touched, challenged, encouraged, and/or helped shape my life and my thinking. I'm planning to do this on the first Monday of every month, the Lord willing. My prayer is that you will be blessed and encouraged through it.

DeleteMy mom used to always read to us too, and then I used to read to my brother before bed from our bunkbeds. I had the bottom, and he would lean his head down to see the pictures. Happy memories.
ReplyDeleteThey sound like wonderful memories! Thank you for visiting. :-)

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Terri! Blessings to you, too!
DeleteGreat idea! We love, love, love to read around here. My kids are older now (the youngest are 12 & 15), but we still read out loud (in addition to whatever books they're reading on their own). And I plan to continue as long as they're willing to listen. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your thoughts with us at Coffee and Conversation. And be sure to share your giveaway when you get started.
That's wonderful, Candy! I think that it is so important to encourage our children to read. God bless you; I'm so glad that you visited!

ReplyDeleteHi! Visiting from The Beauty in His Grip. I volunteer at a women's home for addictions and I've been sharing some church history as a devotional. I haven't done Oswald Chambers yet but would like to as the girls have his devotional and really enjoy it. I love the music on your blog. So peaceful! Diane
ReplyDeleteHi, I didn't enjoy reading as a child. As an adult I love to read. Thank you for sharing with us. May God bless you.
ReplyDeleteI love this!
ReplyDeleteI am one of those people who can read while riding in a car and thank goodness too because we travel a lot in our ministry. Reading was my escape during a very bad childhood. I always heard, readers are leaders and everyone told me I was a leader and I see the wisdom in that now at 69. Through reading I met the Savior the most important person I met through books. Little did I know He would change my life more then any person I ever read about. Great post by the way. Glad I stop by .
